5 Expensive Caribbean Islands and the Affordable Dupes That Look the Same

Some Caribbean islands are expensive because getting there is hard and the land is scarce. Others are expensive because a particular crowd decided they were. The second kind almost always has a neighbour with the same water, the same sand and sometimes the same chefs, at a fraction of the price. Here are five swaps worth making this winter.

St Barts, and why St Martin does the same job

St Barts is expensive because it is small, French and deliberately exclusive. There is no direct flight from the US. You connect through St Martin and take a ten minute hop onto a famously short runway, or you take the ferry. Limited rooms plus limited access equals a price floor that does not move much, even in low season.

St Martin sits fifteen minutes away and shares the same French Caribbean DNA. The northern half is French, which means the same bakery culture, the same beach restaurants and the same rosé at lunch. Grand Case is a genuine food town, not a resort strip with restaurants in it. The yachts anchor off Simpson Bay rather than Gustavia, and the water is identical because it is the same water.

Getting there: SXM takes nonstop flights from several US East Coast hubs, so you skip the connection St Barts forces on you. Check current routes from your airport, since Caribbean schedules shift by season.

Where to stay: Belmond La Samanna on Baie Longue for the luxury end, or Sonesta Ocean Point on the Dutch side, which is the only adults-only all-inclusive on the island. One note on Sonesta: a property refresh began in 2026, with lobby work scheduled from September, so ask what is under way before you book.

Best months: December through April for the driest weather. Late April and early May are the value sweet spot, after high season prices drop but before the summer heat.

If you want the St Barts day anyway, take the ferry across for lunch. It runs regularly and costs a fraction of staying there.

Turks and Caicos, and why Punta Cana looks the same in photos

Grace Bay is genuinely one of the best beaches in the world, and Turks and Caicos prices accordingly. There is very little budget inventory, most resorts are condo style with resort fees on top, and food is expensive because nearly all of it is imported. A week there costs what two weeks cost elsewhere.

Punta Cana delivers the same postcard: flat pale sand, shallow turquoise water, palms. The difference is volume. The Dominican Republic has hundreds of all-inclusive rooms competing on price, so the same photo costs far less to take. All-in resort pricing also removes the food problem that makes Turks expensive in practice.

Getting there: PUJ has direct flights from most East Coast and Midwest hubs, and it is one of the best served airports in the Caribbean.

Where to stay: Riu Palace Punta Cana for family, or Riu Palace Macao if you want adults only. Both sit in the Bavaro and Arena Gorda area. We keep current Punta Cana deals with the booking links attached.

Best months: January through March. This matters more than usual here: sargassum seaweed peaks May through October, so winter is genuinely the better beach.

One honest caveat. Within Punta Cana, Cap Cana and Juanillo stay materially clearer of seaweed than Bavaro, where most of the cheaper inventory sits. Same island, same week, different morning view. If a pristine beach is the whole point of the trip, pay up for Cap Cana or go back to Turks. For everything else, Punta Cana wins on price by a wide margin. Cayman Islands, and why divers go to Cozumel instead

Grand Cayman is expensive because it is a banking centre first and a holiday island second. Hotel rates on Seven Mile Beach are set by business travel and a strong currency, and the island has almost no cheap accommodation. The diving is superb, but you are paying resort-island prices for it.

Cozumel is one of the best and cheapest dive destinations in the hemisphere. The Palancar and Columbia reefs are part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest in the world, and the drift diving there is world class. Visibility is comparable to Cayman. Dive operator prices are not.

Getting there: Fly into Cozumel (CZM) directly, or into Cancun and take the ferry from Playa del Carmen, which runs frequently and takes about 45 minutes.

Where to stay: Cozumel Palace for an all-inclusive right on the waterfront, or Iberostar Cozumel if you want the beach and jungle side of the island. Confirm the rate and what the dive package includes before booking, since dive credits vary by resort.

Best months: March through June for the clearest water and calmest seas. Hurricane season runs June through November, and Cozumel sits in the path.

Mustique, and why Bequia is the version you can book

Mustique is expensive because it is privately owned. The island is run by a company, most of it is villas that rent by the week, and there is effectively no way to visit cheaply. That is the product. It is designed to keep the number of people on the island low.

Bequia is seven miles from it in the same Grenadines chain, and it is the version normal people can book. Same clear water, same sailboats anchored in the harbour, same quiet. Admiralty Bay fills with yachts every winter, and Princess Margaret Beach is a short walk from town. It is unpretentious in a way Mustique is not allowed to be.

Getting there: This is the trade. Fly to Barbados or St Lucia, connect to St Vincent (SVD), then take the ferry to Bequia, which takes about an hour. Budget a full travel day.

Where to stay: Bequia Beach Hotel on Friendship Bay, or Firefly Estate Bequia for something smaller and more personal, set in a 250 year old plantation.

Best months: December through May. The Bequia Easter Regatta is the island at its best if you like boats and crowds, and the week to avoid if you do not.

Be honest with yourself about the travel day. Bequia rewards people who stay a week or more. For a long weekend, the connections eat too much of the trip.

Bermuda, and why Nassau gets you the same energy for less

Bermuda is expensive for structural reasons. It is not really the Caribbean, it is a thousand miles north in the Atlantic. Almost everything is imported, it is an international finance centre, and its hotel inventory skews upscale with little in the middle.

Nassau gives you pink-tinged sand, upscale resorts, and the same easy-flight convenience from the East Coast. Baha Mar and Paradise Island have brought a lot of rooms online in recent years, and more rooms means more competition on rate. You also get casinos, real restaurants and a walkable town, which Bermuda largely does not do.

Getting there: NAS has frequent nonstops from the East Coast, often under three hours from the Northeast.

Where to stay: The Baha Mar complex, which houses several hotels at different price points, or a Paradise Island property if you want to be near Atlantis without paying Atlantis rates.

Best months: December through April. Nassau's advantage over Bermuda widens in winter, because Bermuda is genuinely cool from December to March and its beach season is really May through October.

How to save even more

Travel in shoulder season. Late April through early June, and the first half of December, give you high season weather at noticeably lower rates. Do the all-inclusive maths honestly. All-inclusive wins when you drink, when you have kids, or when food on the island is expensive and imported. It loses when you want to eat out, when the island has a real restaurant culture, or when you are barely at the resort. St Martin and Bequia reward going boutique. Punta Cana and Nassau usually reward all-inclusive.

Set flight alerts before you pick the island. Caribbean fares swing hard by route and season, and the cheapest island changes depending on where you fly from. Set alerts on two or three destinations at once and let the fare decide.

Book the resort and the flight separately, then compare. Package pricing often beats booking apart, but not always, and the gap is worth ten minutes of checking.
