Bahamas vs Jamaica: Which Island Fits Your Trip
The Bahamas is the quick, polished hop with the clearest water you have ever seen. Jamaica is the bigger, louder, more flavorful island with far more all-inclusive choice, and this guide shows exactly where each one wins.

Most people searching this are choosing between two very different vacations that happen to share a sunny photo. The Bahamas is close, polished and famous for water so clear it looks fake. Jamaica is bigger, louder and full of flavor, with music, jerk smoke and a deep bench of all-inclusive resorts. The short version: pick the Bahamas for a short, easy trip and pick Jamaica for the best all-inclusive value. Here is how they compare on flights, resorts, beaches, food, safety and price.
Is Jamaica in the Bahamas?
No. Jamaica and the Bahamas are two separate countries, roughly 490 miles apart. That is the straight-line distance from Kingston to Nassau, and a nonstop flight between them takes about an hour and a half.
The Bahamas is an archipelago of more than 700 islands and cays that sits in the Atlantic Ocean, starting about 50 miles off the coast of Florida. Jamaica is a single large island in the Caribbean Sea, south of Cuba. They have different governments, different currencies and different airports, so you cannot easily combine them in one trip without a separate flight.

Flight time favors the Bahamas, especially from the East Coast
The Bahamas is the faster trip from almost anywhere in the eastern US. Nassau's Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS) is about an hour from Miami and roughly three hours from New York. That makes a Thursday-to-Sunday long weekend completely realistic.
Jamaica is still easy, just a bit farther. Most visitors land at Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay, about 1 hour 45 minutes from Miami and around 4 hours from New York. The catch is the drive after landing. Montego Bay hotels are 10 to 30 minutes from MBJ, but Negril is roughly 75 to 90 minutes by road and Ocho Rios is about 90 minutes.
If you only have three or four nights, the Bahamas wastes less of your trip in transit.
All-inclusive depth: Jamaica wins easily
Jamaica is one of the strongest all-inclusive islands in the Caribbean, and the Bahamas has only a short list of true all-inclusives. Jamaica has resorts for every type of traveler along Montego Bay, Negril, Ocho Rios and Runaway Bay, from budget-friendly Riu properties to adults-only luxury.
Three Jamaica picks worth pricing:
- Excellence Oyster Bay (Montego Bay): Adults-only, all-suite and set on its own peninsula near the airport. It reopened in December 2025 after Hurricane Melissa repairs.

- Couples Swept Away (Negril): A couples-only resort on Seven Mile Beach with a big sports complex and a relaxed, barefoot feel.

- Royalton Negril (Negril): A family-friendly all-inclusive on Seven Mile Beach that reopened in August 2026.

The Bahamas works differently. Big-name resorts like Baha Mar and Atlantis mostly sell rooms, with food and drinks extra, and that adds up fast. The true all-inclusives cluster on Cable Beach, Paradise Island and Grand Bahama:
- Warwick Paradise Island (Paradise Island): Adults-only and one of the better values in Nassau once you count what you would otherwise spend on meals.

- Breezes Bahamas (Cable Beach): A social, budget-friendly all-inclusive about 15 minutes from the airport.

- Viva Fortuna Beach by Wyndham (Grand Bahama): A true all-inclusive with kids' programming, a quieter alternative to Nassau for families.

Beaches: the Bahamas has clearer water, Jamaica has more personality
The Bahamas wins on pure water clarity. Shallow sandbanks and limestone seabeds give Bahamian water its electric turquoise color. Cabbage Beach on Paradise Island and Cable Beach in Nassau are the easy picks, and a day trip to the Exumas, home of the famous swimming pigs at Big Major Cay, is the kind of boat day people remember for years.
Jamaica's beaches are longer and livelier. Seven Mile Beach in Negril is the headline, with soft sand, calm water and sunsets watched from the cliffs of the West End. Doctor's Cave Beach in Montego Bay is a classic for clear, swimmable water close to town. Expect vendors, beach bars and music, which is either the charm or the downside depending on you.

Food: Jamaica wins if you care what you eat
Jamaica has one of the most distinctive food cultures in the Caribbean. Jerk chicken and pork slow-cooked over pimento wood, ackee and saltfish (the national dish), beef patties, curry goat and fresh fruit on every corner. Even resort food tends to include proper Jamaican dishes, and roadside jerk stands are worth leaving the resort for.
The Bahamas centers on seafood. Conch is the star, served as conch salad, cracked conch and conch fritters. The Fish Fry at Arawak Cay in Nassau is the best place to try it in one stop. It is good food, just a narrower range than Jamaica's.
Safety: both are at elevated US advisory levels, so stay smart
Both countries carry elevated US State Department travel advisories, and most crime in both affects areas tourists rarely visit. As of November 2026, the Bahamas is at Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution), with the State Department noting that most crime happens in parts of Nassau and Freeport. Jamaica's advisory level has moved several times since Hurricane Melissa in late 2025, including a drop from Level 3 to Level 2 in January 2026, and it also names specific neighborhoods as Level 4 (Do Not Travel) zones.
For a resort vacation, the practical advice is the same on both islands: book airport transfers through your resort, use licensed taxis, and do excursions with reputable operators. Our Is Jamaica safe? and Is the Bahamas safe? guides break down the details. Check travel.state.gov the week you book, since levels can change with little notice.
Hurricane recovery: Jamaica is still rebuilding in Montego Bay
Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica as a Category 5 storm on October 28, 2025, and the island's resorts are still coming back a year later. As of early September 2026, about 70% of Jamaica's hotel rooms were back in service, according to Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett. Negril recovered first. Montego Bay's Rose Hall strip is slower, with Hyatt Zilara Rose Hall, Hyatt Ziva Rose Hall, Secrets St. James, Secrets Wild Orchid, Breathless Montego Bay, Dreams Rose Hall and Jewel Grande Montego Bay all pushed to early 2027.
That matters for comparison shopping. If your favorite Montego Bay resort is still closed, look at Negril or at the reopened Montego Bay properties on our Montego Bay destination page. The Bahamas' main resort areas around Nassau and Paradise Island were not hit by Melissa.
Price: Jamaica usually costs less for a fully inclusive week
Jamaica is usually the better deal once food and drinks are included. The sheer number of all-inclusives keeps prices competitive, and you can find solid adults-only and family options at a range of price points.
The Bahamas often looks cheaper on flights and more expensive everywhere else. Restaurant and bar prices in Nassau are high because most goods are imported, and many of the famous resorts are room-only. If you book a room-only hotel in the Bahamas, budget generously for meals. Also note that Jamaica's tourism fees are rising in 2027; our Jamaica tourism tax guide explains what changes.
